Looking for the Greenland shark in the North of the Saint-Lawrence in CanadaDuring two consecutive summers, we went to dive on the northern coast of the Saint Lawrence in Quebec province in Canada, in the mouth of the river to photograph sharks of Greenland (Latin name: Somniosus microcephalus). This very rare species of sharks was seen in this area for the first time in 2003. Usually it lives even more in north not far from the Arctic circle. This article and the pictures are for saleThe full content of this article is for sale and it contains about: 2000 words, 12 000 characters (without space), 14 000 characters included spaces. (Statistics are subject to change because we update datas depending on the new information). Baie Comeau area is wild like the rest of the province of Quebec
The city was created by Napoléon-Alexandre Comeau who gave his name.
The area of Bay Comeau is not only one area very rich for the cold water dives but this is also splendid landscapes and savages who extend on tens of square kilometres. The city belongs to the district of Manicouagan for the federal one and to counted of Rene Levesques for the provincial one. It was named in remembering Napoleon-Alexandre Comeau, geologist and naturalist of the northern coast. The very rich fauna of the area, beavers, mosses and caribous allowed the first inhabitants to come to settle there is more than 6000 years. They were then the Vikings, about the year 1000 who settled, then Jacques Cartier at the 16th century. The true settlement dates from the 19th century and today, they are still 30000 people who live in the area. At once left Comeau Bay, which is striking it, is the immense surface of the forests of virginals which extend on hundreds from kilometers.
The water is almost freezing but the variety of the species is impressive
A fast encounter with a Greenland shark but very impressive.
Usually the Greenland shark lives even more in north not far from the Arctic circle. Today, this species of sharks is always the subject of scientific studies because knowledge is still reduced. It is known however that it is the second plus carnivorous shark of earth after the white shark and it is the largest fish of Arctic water and probably the only shark of polar water of the north of the Atlantic. Its length average is 2,5 to 4,5 meters but it could reach 7 meters. The shark is generally finds between 200 and 400 meters and of the studies showed that it grows only from 0,5 to 1 centimeter per year. One can thus advance the assumption that a shark measuring 7 meters could be 200 years old! Baie Comeau and the dives in pictures.
