France. Department of Ain. La Dombes

La Dombes is a marshy area in the north of Lyon in France. It consists of over 1000 ponds where carps are raised for fish farming. These ponds were built by the monks to ensure the food needs of farmers in the region. They are not very deep. They are ideal for photography from floating blinds. This technique allows to take pictures of birds at few meters. Over 131 species of birds have been counted in the ponds.
