Photo Series in Black and White about the Deer of the World

Our passion for deer began with the most common deer species in Europe: red deer. The red deer is the most widespread species in France. It is by exploring the forests of the Charente-Maritime that we began to observe and photograph them.

Our passion for these great land mammals continued in the United States where we live part of the year. We have had the opportunity to observe and photograph white-tailed deer, wapiti, and mule, which is also called black-tailed deer.

Deer are fascinating and interesting animals to photograph. On one hand they are beautiful. We love their very harmonious aesthetic forms. On the other hand, the behaviors they show are interesting to observe.

As we have described in our photographic vision, our main activity is artistic photography. To show our contemplative and artistic interpretation of nature, one of the techniques we have chosen is black and white.

Black and white photography is a photographic technique suitable for many scenes of nature. It requires a particular way to think. A black and white photo should be prepared, should be planned out, from the framing on the scene with the camera until post processing on the computer. But black and white photography is also a philosophy that allows expressing particular emotions impossible to do in color.

It is particularly well adapted to photographs of deer because it allows immediate emphasis on the animals by creating a point of anchor in the image. Often we create this point in uncluttered scenes with a lot of contrast.

Black and white photography is synonymous of beauty and aesthetics. The coats of deer in different seasons are subjects whose rich textures are illuminated by black and white. If the lighting is well chosen, photographs are undeniably better than in color.

In black and white photography, the absence of colors means that the gaze must be guided by the composition of the photograph. We attach great importance to the way deer are placed. Rules of composition and framing become essential. For example, the rule of thirds and strength points can be used to direct the viewer’s attention to specific points of interest. When utilizing framing, the photographer may use the golden number as well as the golden spiral to create the best photo.

When photographing deer, we appreciate their elegance of movement. We love their natural grace when they amble silently through forests. We also appreciate their muscular power during the frequent fights of rutting season.

Deer are always different. Each season highlights them in a different way. That is why we are interested in this species.

In our wildlife photographs, the lights and decoration are as important as the animals themselves. We always try to find the best balance between these three elements. If one of them is missing, we do not keep the photograph, even if the behavior is interesting.

Our approach to wildlife photography is global. Our goal is to show the fragile balance between animals and humans.

This photo project of deer of the world in black and white aims to create collections of photographs of art "Shades of Blacks and Whites".

Amar and Isabelle Guillen

We are fascinated and passionate about the beauties of nature. We love to see the landscapes and observe wild animals whether on land or underwater. We have chosen to become professional photographers to share the emotions we feel when we observe nature whether it be on land or underwater. Our goal is to create art with our photographs. We always try to transform the banal into a contemplative and artistic interpretation.

We are wildlife professional photographers, landscape professional photographers and underwater professional photographers. We also strive to document nature with a focus on conservation and education.

We make art prints from our artistic photographs. These art prints are available on our website. We make exhibitions to show all the beauties and the incredible richness of nature that surrounds us.

We also love to share our love for the beauties of nature with other photographers. To communicate our know-how and to exchange our techniques and our points of view, we organize wildlife photography workshops, underwater photography workshops and landscape photography workshops. We gather together people who have the same passion as us for the beautiful photographs taken in nature.
