April 23, 2014. Black and white photographs of the Charente-Maritime coast and the banks of the Gironde estuary
April 23, 2014. For the past three weeks, we have been working on a new photo project in black and white. The purpose of the project is the Charente coast and the banks of the Gironde estuary. We must create a collection of 20 photographs. So far, we have created eight of them. We chose black and white to better highlight the contrasts and the lights so special to this unique region in the world. We also chose to work the textures of the coastal rock formations, of the clouds and the sceneries of the estuary of the Gironde. We chose black and white to emphasize the typical subjects such as coastal fishing huts.
Black and white photography is a very complex field because it requires not only the selection of very special subjects. Once the subject is chosen, the photograher must choose carefully the best place for the tripod to get the best possible light. Indeed, all the lights are not suitable for gray graduated. The choice of optical filters is essential. They make it possible to harmonize the exposures and better contrast lights. Finally comes the most difficult moment: the pciture processing. Each photo requires special treatment. Corrections are selective. Black and white requires us deep introspection and demands a great expertise. This is an exciting field of photography.
