Exhibition "Atmospheres on the Ponds of the Dombes" at the Festival of Montier-en-Der in November 2017

I exhibited twenty photographs dedicated to the ambiance of the Dombes' ponds during the international nature festival which took place in Montier-en-Der during the month of November in 2017.

My exhibition took place in the town of Droyes located four kilometers from Montier-en-Der. I received hundreds of people wishing to discover either the Dombes region or the technique of the floating blind.

Revealing the Dombes’ Wonders of Nature

The wildlife exhibition entitled "Atmospheres on the Ponds of the Dombes" was intended to show the wild beauty of the wintering and migratory birds that take refuge each year in this huge wetland. I chose to solely focus on the birds living on the ponds.

All the photographs presented during the exhibition were discovered from 2012 to 2016 during the months of May and June. The end of spring is a very interesting period in Dombes to photograph birds as it is the breeding season for migratory birds and sedentary birds.

Love parades and couples are usually formed during the months of April and May. This is an opportunity to photograph unusual behaviors such as the dances and offerings of the Great Crested Grebe. Egg laying occurs in May. The chicks begin to venture out of the nests in June. This is the period I prefer to observe because the show is extraordinary. I have photographed many scenes where adult coots or Great Crested Grebe feed their chicks.

I am always surprised when the young swans follow their parents by leaving their nest to adventure onto the ponds.

Every year, the show on the ponds is constantly repeated. I never weary of this extraordinary sight.

Although I appreciate the wild beauty of the birds living on the ponds of the Dombes, I also marvel at its majestic landscape. Stretching out in a flat plain, the land is bathed by soft, subdued lights us each morning, gently inviting us to begin my first photographic session. It is a wonder to behold.

During all these years, I became aware of how lucky I was to be able to annually visit and photograph these hidden animal treasures.

These twenty artistic and naturalistic photographs show sedentary species such as the gray heron and coots, as well as migratory bird species such as the purple heron.

I restricted myself to choosing these photos out of the hundreds of photos I had originally shot. These choices were supported by my artistic approach and my desire to discover the greatest of these unknown wild wonders. I hope to have achieved my goal.

Exhibiting at the International Nature Festival of Montier-en-Der is an Important Recognition

Exhibiting at the Montier-en-Der festival is a high achievement for a wildlife photographer.

For this 2017 vintage, 350 photographers had applied. 90 exhibitions were selected. In these 90 exhibitions, I also count the photographers invited by the festival. These numbers show the difficulty of being retained by the organization. I do not know the selection criteria because an exhibition must be in keeping with the spirit of the festival and must be in the chosen theme. I am truly humbled and honored by this experience.

The Festival of Montier-en-Der: Networking in a Unique Place

For me, this 2017 edition of the Montier-en-Der festival was a unique opportunity to create new professional contacts and to strengthen the trust of my many trainees.

As some trainees have pointed out to us, they feel like they're part of a big family. This is certainly one of the best compliments I will ever receive.

The following photos display my many interns, who over time, have become friends who are deeply valued by me. I am thankful for the blessing of their friendship.

The festival of Montier-en-Der is the place where I can meet again to share our passion for the wonders of nature.

Exhibition "Atmospheres Surrounding the Ponds of the Dombes"

In October 2017, I exhibited twenty wildlife and artistic photographs at the Château des Creusettes in the district of Ain in France. The wildlife exhibition entitled "Atmospheres on les ponds of la Dombes" was intended to unveil the rugged wonders of migratory and wintering birds in this huge wetland. I chose to display the living, breathing splendor of the birds that were native to these ponds.

Several hundred-people crowded under a tent to discover these little-known treasures.

An Exhibition That Aligns to Our Artistic Approach

All the photographic works presented at the exhibition "Atmospheres on the Ponds of la Dombes" are in keeping with my artistic approach. My sceneries are carefully chosen to highlight the birds. The enveloping lights are very soft and evenly distributed, which masterfully showcases the wild beauties of this region. My scenes are ethereal with one or two birds but never more.

This exhibition is both artistic and naturalistic. The birds are perfectly identifiable. The goal I pursued was to show both the Dombistes (people native in La Dombes) and the people living in the Ain department that La Dombes is full of breathtaking birds—lesser known treasures that must be cared for.

This naturalistic approach does not prevent me from showcasing dreamlike scenes. This dreamlike effect is very important in my photographs. I am passionate about the wonders of nature and I want my spectators to escape into my photographs through the contemplation of my photographs. This is the sole purpose of my art photography collections.

An Exhibition Created at the Castle of Creusettes in La Dombes in Ain

This exhibition took place in a magnificent castle, the Creusettes, located in the heart of La Dombes in the village of Chapelle Chatelard in the department of Ain. Containing over one thousand ponds, this massive wetland was perfect for hosting twenty photographic works dedicated to native birds.

The castle, Creusettes, was built in 1860 by the Lyon industrialist Alfonse Clément-Desormes. It is in La Dombes, halfway between Lyon and Geneva. The red brick house, covered by a glazed tile roof, has been completely restored to its former glory by renovation. Situated near the river Chalaronne, the castle is surrounded by French gardens and animal parks.

The exhibition was sheltered under a huge marquee. I chose a horizontal format with a width of 90 cm (3 feet) to make the entire exhibition completely homogeneous. The community of La Dombes had commissioned this exhibition to be organized in modular grids, in which the spectators could wander at their pleasure. This also allowed me to set up a scenography within the aisles and passages.

Four Years of Work

All the photographs presented during the exhibition were created during the months of May and June in the period of 2012 to 2016. The end of spring is a very interesting period in La Dombes to photograph birds as it is the breeding season for migratory birds or sedentary birds.

Love parades and couples are usually formed during the months of April and May. This is an opportunity to photograph unusual behavior such as dances and offerings of Great Crested Grebe. After the laying occurs in May, the chicks start to come out of the nests in June. This is the period I prefer because the show is extraordinary. I have photographed many scenes of adult coots or Great Crested Grebe feeding their chicks.

I am always surprised by the young swans leaving the nest to discover the ponds at a young age by following their parents.

Every year, the show on the ponds is constantly renewed. I never know weariness.

But La Dombes is not just known for its breathtaking birds—it has hauntingly beautiful landscapes as well. Each morning of my stay, I am welcomed by the first photographic session of the day: La Dombes’ flat landscapes are bathed in soft and subdued morning lights.

Over my past trips, I have become aware of how lucky I am to be able to come every year and photograph these hidden animal treasures. Indeed, even during my beginning trips, I noticed that many dombistes (inhabitants of the Dombes) were not aware of the treasures that they encountered daily.

La Dombes: Paradise for Wildlife Photographers

For me professional wildlife photographer that specialize in live animals from the wetlands, La Dombes is a real paradise. In fact, nearly 280 species of wild birds have been recorded in this region.

>Many of these birds are one of the 94 species of passerines. They are small songbirds, like the melodious linnet or the song thrush ... but also the rook crow. There are also 183 non-passerines. They are generally larger, most of which are game species, such as ducks, but also protected species like storks.

Another distinction considers the breeders: 154 species. The non-breeders are often migrants, winter and summer visitors that number 123 species.

These various birds are not evenly distributed in the ecological space of La Dombes, which can be subdivided into four main functional compartments: the woodlots, the crops associated with what remains of the hedgerow, the ponds, and the eutrophic environment of the villages.

For my project dedicated to the birds of the Dombes, I chose to focus only on the birds of the ponds. A humid environment, the ponds contain beautiful landscapes of reed beds, water flowers, and reflections on the surface of the water. These ponds are perfect cases that highlight the beauty of birds. I could not discover those same interesting sights anywhere else in the woods or in the high forests.

The pond environment includes many species of birds: about fifty nidifies and many migrators, even if the quota fluctuates more than in other environments according to the seasons and years. On the pounds, it is possible to observe crested grebes, pygmy grebes and black-necked grebes. Ducks, geese, shelducks and swans can also be spotted. Eight species of herons, like grey heron, purple heron, and little bittern, are common in this area. Eurasian coot, common moorhen, black-head gull and whiskered tern also call this pond home.

The "aquatic" diurnal raptors are represented in nesting only by the harrier of the reeds. It is necessary to wait for the time of migration or the season of winter to observe species as prestigious as the osprey or the bald eagle. In passerines, only sylviids are well represented as breeders: frightening and turdoid marsh warbler, reed warblers, and the luscinioid locusts, accompanied by the reed sparrow. The other species remain occasional. Given the importance of the "freeze" parameter on the ability of the ponds to retain water birds, their avifauna is less sedentary than those of other compartments: over one-third of breeding species hibernates in winter. It is not always the same individuals; as it is with the case of the gray heron.

The Use of the Floating Blind

To create my photographs, I used a floating blind. It allows me to move around the ponds while walking. I can thus draw closer to the birds to observe and photograph them.

In my wildlife photographs, I like to photograph animals at eye level to capture the brightness in their eyes. This is what I call the spark of life.

The floating blind is very mobile and does not make noise. I can thus choose the best angles to seize the light and better emphasize the birds without frightening them.

Some birds, like ducks, are very fearful and cannot be approached easily. To make the photographs of the two common pochard presented in the exhibition, I had to wait for three days in the middle of a pond so that they became familiar with my presence.

The Choice of Artistic Photographs

These twenty artistic and naturalistic photographs show sedentary species such as the gray heron or coots, and migratory birds such as the purple heron or the common pochard.

I limited myself to making certain choices from the hundreds of photos I had. These choices were conditioned by my artistic approach but also by the desire to best display these unknown wild beauties. I hope to have achieved my goal.

The exhibition 'Lights and colors of landscapes in the southern United States'

This exhibition devoted to the wonders of nature as seen in the landscapes of the southern United States takes you from the state of Tennessee in the East to the state of Arizona in the West by way of Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah.

In our photographs we show the beautiful lights and the magical, unique colors found in this country where distances are not measured in kilometers or miles, but in hours of driving.

The exhibition is on display in the city of La Tremblade, Charente-Maritime, France

The exhibition "Lights and colors of landscapes in the southern United States” is on display from June 22 to September 30, 2016 at the bookstore and tea lounge "L’encre et la Boussole” (The Ink and the Compass) in the city of La Tremblade, Charente-Maritime, in western France. This is a peaceful, relaxing place where our landscape photographs take on all their values and all their meanings. In the serene atmosphere in "L’encre et la boussole”, visitors can fully immerse themselves in the atmospheres of landscapes bathed in energizing lights and colors.

The bookstore is located at 3 Rue de la Seudre, 17390 La Tremblade. The website is www.librairie-lencre-laboussole.fr.

This exhibition is on display in an unusual location. We chose it because this location guarantees that the photographs will be seen by many people who visit the bookstore to buy travel books. We thought that this was the best way to reach an audience that shares our passion for the wonders of nature.

A virtual bridge between France and the US

We are two professional photographers who are passionate about the wonders of nature. Our artistic work allows us to share our passion through our landscape, wildlife, and underwater photographs. Since 2001, we have been splitting our time between Charente-Maritime in France and the state of Texas in the United States. We have found our balance while traveling on this virtual bridge that links the two countries.

In Charente-Maritime, we find tranquillity through the soft lights created by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary. These lights reinvigorate us as we develop a dreamlike, ethereal vision of landscape and wildlife photography.

Our passion for American landscapes

From the vast landscapes of the United States, we draw the energy and raw force to create photographs where borders seem to be abolished. It is when traveling in this country which seems to have no limits that we realize the meaning of the words "greatness" and "infinity".

For 15 years we have been traveling in the US, looking for hidden treasures that are off the beaten path. We remain amazed and enchanted by the beauty and the variety of the landscapes we see, whether they are forested, covered with sand, covered with water, or made up of mineral forms. The landscapes seem to extend to infinity and never end.

It is in these wonderful landscapes, bathed in a rough, sometimes supernatural light, very different from that of Charente-Maritime, that we have learned to listen to silence.

We have always been fascinated by the wonders of nature. Photography has enabled us to express what we feel deep in ourselves when we are standing in a rocky landscape in the great American West or in a forest near the coast of Charente-Maritime. We have chosen to give a contemplative and artistic interpretation of nature.

We still continue our quest

Whether in Charente-Maritime or in the United States, we strive to show the delicate balance between nature and human creations. We take great care to plan the details and the structures of each of our photographs.

Have a good trip.

June-July 2014 : exhibition "The Lords of the forests of Charente-Maritime" in Royan, France.

Wildlife photo exhibition 'The Lords of the forests of Charente-Maritime'

Exhibition of 30 photographs of animals: deers, wild boars and fallow deers of the forests and woods of the Charente-Maritime department. Portraits and animal behaviors in natural environments highlighting the beauty of that unknown nature.

From June 6 to July 12, 2014, we present 30 photographs in the photographic art gallery D&S Souchon in the city of Royan in Charente-Maritime, France. Two years of work were needed to create these pictures of the lords of the woods the Charente-Maritime region. We spent hundreds of hours in the woods, forests and prairies to capture these special moments. We wanted to highlight the beauty of the deers, wild boar, fallow deers in their natural environments. We paid special attention to the choice of the lights to decorate and dress the most beautiful colors of the coats of animals. We wanted to show in a simple way, the natural beauty of this very misunderstood area for wildlife photography.

We wanted to show that the Charente-Maritime area has a lot of wildlife treasures unknown by tourists and local people. Mammals we photographed are fearful, discreet and fleeing humans. Yet with a good knowledge of the forests and habits of mammals and with a little bit of patience, it is possible to observe and photograph these animals that we nicknamed the 'Lords of the wood of the Charente-Maritime'.

The book "The secrets of underwater photography"

The book "The secrets of underwater photography"

Since the publication of our last guide devoted to underwater digital photography in 2007, many changes have occurred.

The underwater photo gear has shifted: cameras, whether compact or SLR cameras have become more sophisticated, with dynamic ranges wider and wider; noise management has also improved considerably. The functions previously only available on SLRs have become common on compact, as well as bridges that have developed since. Today, almost all cameras and have a way of shooting in RAW format which, thanks to a development of computer processing, access to quality unparalleled images. Hybrid devices have also made ??their appearance: they should appeal to all divers looking for excellent crisp images without having to go down with pounds of material in water.

Regarding the light, fiber optic connection is generalized to all cameras; the STTL mode become the standard TTL mode. Finally, many new housing manufacturers appeared; we can now easily find aluminum housing made with professional quality, even for small cameras. Nobody had imagined the consequences of these technological developments: the number of underwater photographers has increased significantly, the amount of photos has multiplied exponentially.

But a lot of images are similar. From underwater photographers to artistic directors, thru the editors of magazines, the need to see other approaches became increasingly pressing. In three years, we have thus found a real change and evolution how beginners and professionals are creating underwater photos. The main rules of aesthetics enrich, change, renew themselves. Whatever their level, photographers must create their world picture and go further, to surprise their audiences.

Although it was written to be progressive in the chapters, if you already own notions of underwater photography you can read this book in a nonlinear way, according to your aspirations and needs. In the first chapter, you will find all the basic elements necessary to the creation of images, in the second, a detailed hardware panoram of the configurations is available. The third chapter is dedicated to all techniques to apply to take underwater pictures (hardware, adjustments), the fourth is just about the creative aspect. Throughout this book, we deal with hardware, shooting or artistic, we have tried to describe a simple, instructional and teaching way to all concepts and practical knowledge for everyone. Beginner or expert, can develop their creativity. We also offer technical and tips for great photos in shallow or very known places. We used to say that photographers will sometimes look far away from what they have in their garden; create a beautiful picture, it is just about to learn to look.

We have learned this experience during the last eight years. We have animated more than fifty photo trips, with hundreds participants. We are familiar with all the issues that photographers novice divers, advanced or expert arise, we wanted them provide here the most detailed and comprehensive answers possible by illustrating very concrete examples, while giving access to the theoretical elements allow them to understand better.

We hope that you will draw in these pages a lot of ideas, know-how and the desire to deepen your technique and underwater photographic vision.

The book written in French is available in all book stores or by order.

It is also possible to order it by internet. Click here to order by Amazon.

Winter-Spring 2014 : exhibition of underwater photographs in Royan, France.

Underwater photo exhibition in Royan at the D.S Souchon gallery.

"Sea and Coast": theme of the exhibition

Gallery Souchon DS offers this winter to discover dozens of shots creating by authors photographing the sea, here or far away. They took pictures of the coast of Charente-Maritime. They are adventurers of warm seas. They also are reporters. They have in common to be among the most stringent in their category.

From the sand bars of Cordouan to the drop offs covered by coral colonies of the Red Sea, from foreshore of Charente-Maritime lagoons to the blue lagoons of the Maldives, the exhibition is an unmissable appointment for all lovers of the sea. From the sky or inside a deep immersion in the ocean or comfortably sitting on the shore, each photographer presented explores the sea in its own way. All the photographers deliver shots composed by subtle or strong light, brightly colored or discrete.

The viewers are transported from familiar to exotic landscapes. They are moving in snow or fog, moving in the fury of a storm or the tranquility of the vast oceans. They cross a solitary walker or linger among workers of the sea . Through their complementarity, these approaches offer a dense and therefore incomparable photographic journey which everyone can take part.
