For this collection of fine art prints in the theme “shades of black and white”, I wanted to explore themes of power, tranquility, and serenity found in animals.
I chose to focus on the North American bison, an iconic animal. Like myself, you have probably watched old western movies containing Native American Indians and North American bison. They are inseparable.
Indeed, the North American bison has long been upheld by tribes of hunters as a symbol of abundance and prosperity. Indeed, it was the main food source for the Native American Indians living on the Great Plains. The hunter used every piece of the bison. One animal supplied meat for food, skin for clothing, and hooves for glue. The bones were used to make kitchen utensils. The tendons were used as bowstrings.
Symbolically, the bison represents abundance, success, wealth, food, influence, sharing, generosity, and fertility.
Even today, for many Native American Indian tribes, the bison signifies generosity: giving what we can to people in need.
The bison promotes reconciliation and reflection on the purpose and value of peace. It teaches us gratitude and humility.
If you have ever been lucky enough to find yourself within a few feet of a bison, you have certainly experienced this feeling of power and strength.
I have never encountered these feelings with other animals. However, a bison remains calm without any animosity unless it is bored. Then it may charge without any warning. Its power and fury are phenomenal.
I have the greatest respect for these peaceful animals that provide the comfort and peace I seek to find in nature.
