Scenery and birds of la Dombes in the Ain department, France.
La Dombes is a marshy region located in the north of Lyon in France. It consists of over 1000 lakes. They are human made. They were dug by the monks who took advantage of the clay deposits in the region. Each pond is built the same way with a gentle slope that allows water to flow slowly in the draining toward a small lock, called the "thou". The flow path is called the "bief". These are ponds for fish farming of pike and carp. Each year, fishing is carried out between October and December. Dombes alone has almost 18% of the surface of ponds operated in France. These extensive farms are managed by some 300 farmers who produce 21% of fish production (1600 tons) of which 27% of carp raised in France and 21% of pike. Half the production is for the market and the other for stocking ponds by the fishing company. There is also the development of the trout farm and a growing number of ponds and lakes devoted exclusively to the practice of fly fishing. From an ornithological point of view, the Dombes present a great diversity of bird species such as crested grebe, grebes Grebe, Black-necked grebes, the pochard, cormorants, etc..
