Underwater bottoms of Cousteau reserve in Guadeloupe island, north of the Caribbean sea.

Musical slideshow created with photographs of Cousteau preserve in Guadeloupe.

In 1955, French Captain J-Y Cousteau shoots around Pigeon Islands, some scenes of his famous feature film "The Silent World" who gets the Palme d'Or in 1956 in Cannes and a film Oscar in the United States. The Pigeon Islands are located in front of the beach of Malendure town in Bouillante in Guadeloupe Island in the north of Caribbean Sea. Jacques Cousteau was fascinated by the wealth of the underwater bottoms in this region and the bio diversity of marine life. Through relationships and excellent communication, he makes understand to local authorities the interest of a such site around the island. This is the beginning of the scuba diving and the development of nautical pleasures. The island's authorities decided to apply some basic protective measures. This marine area of 400 hectares is gradually becoming an area protected against over-fishing and mooring for large ships that may damage the bottoms where grow very large sponges with fragile body. The name Cousteau was found associated to this preserve. Now this is one of the top diving sites in the north of the Caribbean Sea. Today, the Cousteau Reserve is just a protection zone and not really a reserve. One day, it will be integrated in a national reserve around Guadeloupe.
