The Story of the Collection
During a trip to Yosemite National Park, I decided to spend a full day on the summit of Sentinel Dome. It is a hike that may seem easy but with 33 pounds (15 kilograms) of camera gear on my back and the climb to the summit (8,123 feet/2,476 meters), I can assure you it is not easy at all. The last climb is difficult and tiring.
Yosemite is for me a mythical park because it is in Sierra Nevada which was the playground of a photographer I greatly respect: Ansel Adams. He is the origin of my passion for black and white photography. During my travels, I do not hesitate to follow his footsteps to try to better understand the foundations of his photographic approach. This trip to Yosemite was no exception.
On this day in August, I left incredibly early in the morning while it was still dark to reach the top to see the sun rise. Sentinel Dome is an extraordinary place for landscape photography.
The morning photographs were interesting. I spent the rest of the day waiting for the afternoon. I had taken something to read. The time passed rather quickly. I was directed towards El Capitan, to photograph it with beautiful lights. El Capitan is certainly one of the most photographed places in Yosemite. The light on El Capitan was not yet what I expected. I decided to have a hot tea to warm up. On my way to my bag, I happened to glance in the opposite direction of El Capitan. My gaze rested upon Half Dome, which is another mythical place in Yosemite. There I was met with clouds of extraordinary beauty as only Yosemite can create them.
I often say that clouds are the language of the sky. I was looking at the perfect illustration of my vision of clouds, where the shapes were evocative and illuminated by the light. It looked as if large pieces of absorbent cotton had been tossed up into the bright sky. I felt like I could touch them and reshape them at will. They flew over Half Dome and seemed to caress it. I was ecstatic. This breathtaking performance lasted for over an hour.
I froze these moments in these art photos in this collection of black and white art photos. Everything was perfect. The shapes were light and harmonious, the light could not have been better planned.
