The Story of the Collection
You may be one of those lucky few who already know about Great Sand Dunes National Park in the state of Colorado in the United States. Maybe you have had the chance to walk among these huge dunes that are located at an altitude of more than 7,200 feet (2,200 meters).
The Great Sand Dunes is one of my favorite places in the United States. I have a passion for dunes. They are quiet and serene places in which I find a great deal of peace. I have already had the opportunity to travel through several large deserts.
But the Great Sand Dunes National Park has something special besides the altitude. It is the height of the dunes. The highest one is almost 750 feet (230 meters) high. The first time I climbed it with all my camera equipment, I thought I would never reach the top. Since then, every time I start to climb it, I take my time, stopping about every hundred steps.
These dunes cover more than thirty square miles (seventy-eight square kilometers). They are bordered by a chain of mountains. The spectacle is extraordinary. The winds coming from the mountains, which can be very violent, sculpt the shape of each one.
During a trip, while I was in the middle of the park, a brutal storm fell on the dunes. I have never witnessed such a spectacle in the sky. Fierce winds of nearly thirty-seven miles per hour (Sixty kilometers per hour) swept across the sand. I could not move forward. It was frightening. And yet I could not stop. Whenever I paused, the sand piled up around me. Fortunately, the storm went away as quickly as it came. I was able to take beautiful pictures of those moments that I will remember for the rest of my life.
In this collection, I wanted to evoke the wide-open spaces which are so characteristic of the Southwest. This time, they are not mineral landscapes frozen in time, but landscapes that are created anew each day according to the specific weather conditions.
