The Story of the Collection
This collection of fine art photos is dedicated to Great Sand Dunes, a national park located in the state of Colorado in the United States. These huge dunes tower to over 750 feet (230 meters) high and are located at an altitude of more than 7,200 feet (2 200 meters).
The Great Sand Dunes make up an actual desert that extends over 30 square miles (78 square kilometers). After patiently trekking to a peak, you are overwhelmed with a blanketed silence. Nothing seems to be able to break the serenity and the calmness that reigns, except for occasional storms which are unpredictable and swift.
During a trip, I had slowly climbed a huge dune to capture some pictures. It took me at least 20 minutes to cover the 650 feet (200 meters) of the climb. It may seem long. But take my word for it, it's a terrible effort to climb while walking on the sand that escapes with each step. It is even harder when you are carrying 33 pounds (15 kilograms) of camera gear on your back. Once I got to the top, the weather conditions had encouraged me to spend the day in the dunes. Clouds had appeared, giving me the opportunity to take beautiful pictures against the backdrop of an extraordinary sky.
I did not realize that these clouds were the forerunner of one of the most terrible storms I have ever experienced. The winds blew at more than 37 miles per hour (60 kilometers per hour). I could hardly stand up. I took some incredible pictures. And then after a few minutes, I could not see anything. I put my camera and photo filters away as best I could. I could not go back because I could not see where I had come or where I should go. I could not stay where I was because the sand level was rising around my legs. Thus, I decided to walk around in circles. The storm lasted less than an hour. It left as quickly as it had arrived. I no longer recognized the place where I had taken the pictures. The storm had changed the shape of the dunes. It was the first time I had experienced a storm from inside a dune desert. It was incredible. The natural elements had changed the landscape. In a way, the natural elements had changed my perspective as well.
Although it was overwhelming, that storm was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I will never forget it.
