I took this photo in Yellowstone National Park in winter. Temperatures were -13 degrees Fahrenheit (-25 degrees Celsius). I put on my snowshoes and set off to scout the snowy, padded landscape.
I couldn't hear a sound except that of my breath, panting from the cold. As always, I was totally entranced by the spectacle and the absolute silence as the snow absorbed all sounds.
After an exhausting climb to the top of a hill in the Lamarre Valley, I came face to face with a small herd of bison. I decided to spend some time with them, especially as the snowstorm had stopped.
Suddenly, on my right, two young males some fifty meters apart decided to measure their strength in a friendly joust. It was not a fight in the true sense of the word, like those that occur in August during the rut, but just a test of their mettle.
