The Story of the Collection
Aspirit can be defined as an immaterial being, a ghost that is supposed to manifest itself on earth.
Each of these abstract art pictures, which are presented in timeless black and white or color, evoke these famous spirits. They depict plays of light on the surface of the water.
I made these photos from a floating blind on the ponds of La Dombes in France. Each year, I spend 6 weeks photographing migratory birds in La Dombes. Every day, I spend several hours waiting for a heron or a duck to appear in front of me. During these long hours of waiting, I am standing in the middle of ponds surrounded by silence, light and water. I am never bored because there is always something to observe on a pond: from the simple feather left by a swan to a fleeting reflection forgotten by a low-angled light on the surface of the water.
One day, as the day was breaking over a pond, I had the sun in front of me. No birds were out yet. I put my eye in the viewfinder of my camera and saw that the surface of the water was covered with pieces of light. It was a magical sight. I felt as if spirits created by the light of the dawn were manifesting. My imagination was running wild. I saw sheets of light intertwining with one other. I also saw a beautiful nova blazing in the pond. Other scenes evoked an esoteric language distilled by the spirits that manifested themselves before me. We are often ready to imagine anything when the morning coolness surprises us and there is nothing to do but wait and dream.
In the end, I settled on the idea that before me danced spirits of light which only manifested themselves at sunrise and had thus greeted me in the early morning.
