At the heart of the Danakil Desert in northeastern Ethiopia lies a geological gem of surreal beauty: the Dallol Volcano.

Nestled beneath a thick layer of salt, more than 100 meters below sea level (328 feet), this multicolored volcano emerges like an extraterrestrial spectacle within the inhospitable region of the Danakil Desert, just fifteen kilometers from the Eritrean border.

Resulting from a massive magma explosion, Dallol has transformed this land into one of the hottest places on Earth since its last eruption in 1926, with temperatures often exceeding 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit).

Venturing into this arid and hostile region immediately reveals the strangeness of the landscape. Dallol unveils itself as a unique geological site, where the earth seems to have merged with a vivid and vibrant palette of colors. The ground is dotted with salt formations, sulfur, and other minerals, creating a bewildering and captivating tableau. The noxious vapors released by the volcano add a sensory dimension to this already extraordinary place.

This immense earthly cauldron houses an incredible diversity of geological phenomena. Acidic hot springs, smoking geysers, sulfur mounds, salt columns, and acid pools form a disconcerting, almost demonic landscape. In the Afar language, "Dallol" translates to "disintegrated," a reference to the acidic springs that have the power to decompose anything that ventures into them.

The striking color palette emanating from this surreal landscape is breathtaking. Yellow, red, and green emerge from the high concentration of minerals such as sulfur and iron oxide. Every corner of this desert seems imbued with a different hue, creating a chromatic symphony that defies the imagination. The salt formations resemble natural sculptures, evoking mountain peaks and strange lakes.

Nevertheless, despite this profusion of colors, an ethereal beauty emanates from the desolate landscape of Dallol.

To capture this mystical essence, I chose to photograph this unique site in black and white. The resulting images evoke another planet, with mountainous formations that seem to emerge from a distant world. The small lakes resemble oases lost in a desert expanse, adding a touch of mystery to these artistic photographs.

The salt formations, captured in black and white, create the illusion of a ghost planet, devoid of any inhabitants due to the extreme temperatures that make life impossible. The images evoke an inherent solitude in this unreal landscape, reinforcing the idea that Dallol is truly a place apart, almost disconnected from the rest of the world.

The Dallol Volcano in the Danakil Desert in Ethiopia is more than just a geological phenomenon. It is a living canvas of colors and shapes that transports visitors to a strange and mysterious world.

The choice of black and white to immortalize these unique moments adds an artistic dimension, highlighting the singularity of this place that seems to belong to another planet. Dallol is undoubtedly one of the most dazzling and unusual gems on our planet.
