How to Enhance Colors in Nature Photography

The colors in a photo have a strong impact on the emotions which the photo conveys. Fortunately, all kinds of colors are present in nature. They can appear through natural or artificial light, with or without filters. They create perspective and affect the height and depth of the image. A palette limited to one or two colors creates a sense of grandeur and immensity. Conversely, a profusion of colors returns the emphasis to the main subject of the photo.

Processing is an important step in enhancing the colors in nature photographs and changing either their saturation or their brightness. But these specific treatments require careful work, which is time-consuming. It is crucial to emphasize the colors without distorting the photos. The photographer must preserve the natural appearance of the scenes and of animals’ coats or feathers. Often, when I show my photographs to other photographers who went to the same place that I did, they me that I was not in the same place or that the lighting was different when they were there. This is because of the art of creating pictures.

However, it is not easy to fix the colors in a photo. You have to follow certain rules to acquire harmonious photographs.

In this photo of a purple heron, I worked the red colors to create contrast with the green.

Qualities of a Color

There are three main qualities of a color:

  • the tone (the color can be light or dark in tone; some people call this clarity),
  • the hue (e.g. red, green, or yellow). This is what qualifies the more a color,
  • the saturation (intensity).

When he creates a photograph, a photographer should always analyze the attributes of the colors in the photo so that the image is as harmonious as possible. This is pretty easy to do with a digital camera, because the display on the back of the camera makes it possible to analyze the colors, even if the screen is not properly calibrated.

Primary, Secondary and Complementary Colors

The concepts that I am going to describe here are valid only in photography (not in painting, for example). If you blend colors haphazardly, you cannot expect to create a harmonious composition. The first important concept is that of primary colors. A primary color cannot be created by mixing other colors. The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. All the other colors are obtained by mixing the primary colors together.

The second concept is that of secondary colors. Blending equal parts of two primary colors produces a secondary color. Green is made by combining blue and yellow, orange by combining red and yellow, and purple by combining blue and red.

The third concept is that of complementary colors. A color is always enhanced by its complementary color, so if you have both colors in a photo, the colors will have a great deal of impact. Blue is complementary to yellow, red is complementary to cyan, and green is complementary to magenta.

Green, blue and red are also called "light colors" because when I mix them, a lighter color is produced. They are the primary colors of the "additive color" system, where colors are created by mixing different colored light. Yellow, cyan and magenta are also called the "dark colors". They are the primary colors of the "subtractive color" system, where colors are obtained by absorbing certain wavelengths of light from white light. When these colors are mixed, darker shades are the result.

Warm and Cool Colors

Warm colors range from yellow to red-violet on the color wheel. Cool colors from blue-violet to yellow-green. Depending on whether they are warm or cool, colors can have a calm or bracing effect, and have a different impact on the emotions. They highlight a subject and flesh out the message that the photographer wants to convey in the photo. Advertisers are familiar with these effects. A nature photographer can use colors to make it clear which is his main and which his secondary subject. For example, in underwater photography, if a photographer wants to photograph a whale, the photograph’s overall color should be blue to evoke the whale’s wisdom, slowness, and grace, because those are the qualities associated with whales in the collective unconscious. A clown fish, on the other hand, would be perfectly matched with a yellow and red multicolored anemone, which will enhance its cheerful and naughty appearance.

Joining a Photo Workshop Is to Meet Other Photographers

My Teaching Method: ACANP

My teaching method, "ACANP," is based on practice and my experiences. All the trainees who have attended my workshops confirm this every time.

I have developed this method over the time that I have taught underwater, wildlife and landscape photography.

It is based both on the study of the basic techniques of nature photography and on advanced artistic concepts that enable each participant to develop his or her own photographic vision.

All the concepts I teach are based on reality out in the field. They come from my own experience and practice. I believe that it is important to reveal my secrets to trainees.

Students never represent competitors for me. A professional photographer’s job requires much more than technical knowledge. Success as a professional photographer is based on business, marketing and communication skills. It also requires a lot of management skills. To be a professional photographer, you must first and foremost be an entrepreneur. The points taught in the courses deal with a completely different area.

ACANP is an educational progression that begins with learning to use the camera and gear, and the basic rules of composition, such as how to frame photos. These concepts are intended for beginners who have never taken formal courses.

This educational progression will also give experienced, knowledgeable photographers many tools to refine their vision. I use concrete examples to channel their sensitivity in order to successfully open new creative doors.

Throughout my courses, I discuss questions about equipment based on what I are working on out in the field. For example, if I am working on wildlife photography, I will comprehensively explain how to use gradients and neutral filters. In wildlife photography, I discuss things like using flashes at high speed to freeze the motion of birds, such as hummingbirds. In underwater photography, I address topics such as using mixed light when photographing scenes.

ACANP takes into account all the aspects of photography, from taking the photo to processing it and creating slideshow or prints.

The advantage of having an established educational progression is that it enables participants to come back to other courses and continue to learn and progress. In the case of ACANP, the progression is constantly changing in response to the needs of the trainees.

I Take Two Classes Per Year Myself

I do more than just organize photography workshops. I take two classes per year myself. The first always has to do with marketing or sales techniques. The second is always a very technical course. One of the classes that I have just taken was about compositing.

I believe it is far more profitable to take a week-long class with a specialized trainer who will immediately explain everything that I need to learn than to spend time teaching myself. Financially, it is always more profitable.

I always take classes from the best specialists in any discipline I want to learn. I only have 6 days for each course, so they all need to be productive and conducted by serious leaders.

Meeting Other Enthusiasts About Photography and Nature

One of the goals of nature photography workshops is to be amazed by the richness of the landscapes that surround you. If, like me, you are primarily enthusiasts about the wonders of nature, then observing the animal world will give you joy and inimitable, constantly renewed feelings.

All the photographers who come to these workshops pursue the same goal, based on this simple idea of sharing the same passion.

To preserve the wonders of nature, I always respect the environment when taking pictures. I do not interfere with fauna or flora to make a picture. I do not feed the animals because it would change their natural behavior.

In wildlife photography, my techniques are based on stalking animals, going on a photo walk, or using a blind. I always stay within the boundaries imposed by wildlife. I never disturb a nest or a newborn mammal. If I believe that the creation of a photograph could disturb an animal or damage a natural site, I move on to look for another opportunity.

During my nature photography courses, I demand respect for the environment, whether I are on land or underwater.

Participating in a nature photography workshop is also an opportunity to meet and get to know other photographers who have the same moral and ethical values.

Discovering Hidden Treasures and Having Adventures in Distant Places

One of the goals of my workshops is to travel in order to discover new olfactory, auditory, tactile, visual, and gustatory experiences.

A photography workshop is more than a trip. It is a unique experience. I give participants all the technical guidance they need to succeed in creating photographs, but it is also another way to observe nature and the animal species that inhabit it.

These courses can be taught in environments that are near or far from home, but whatever the destination, the goal is the same: to explore the region in a different way. A nature photographer is more than a tourist.

Relaxing and Thinking of Different Things

A nature photography workshop is a training period for a photographer who wants to deepen his expertise.

However, it is also a period of vacation and relaxation for a participant who wants to take his mind off of everyday things in the company of other people who share his passion for the wonders of nature.

That's why my classes always include accommodation in nice hotels or beautiful cruise ships. The restaurants are always excellent. During my courses, I do everything I can to enable everyone to forget the worries of everyday life. I do my best to make these moments of relaxation memorable.

Sharing, Motivating, Inspiring

I have a motto I always apply to my workshops and photography trips: sharing, motivating, inspiring.

Sharing: I always share all the techniques that the participants need to bring them to the level they wish to reach in photography. Whether they are beginners or advanced, I give them all the tips and techniques that they need to improve their photographic technique.

Motivating: I strive to always push the participants to go further in their photographic approach. I always do this in a pleasant way and give constructive feedback.

Inspiring: my workshops and photography trips, together with my educational expertise, always inspire participants to go down new artistic paths the existence of which they never suspected until they came on a trip with me.

Finally

Participating in a nature photography workshop is taking a class that will help you open new creative doors or learn new photographic techniques.

It is also a way to discover new horizons in the company of photographers who share the same passion and the same ethical values.

However, a workshop is also way to relax and enjoy a great holiday in a pleasant atmosphere where photography is at the center of all the discussions.

I have trained hundreds of photographers so far. My trips and photography workshops represent an opportunity to share knowledge about animals’ habits and the places they frequent as well as about photography techniques. As enthusiasts about the wonders of nature, I all move forward in my quest for photographic inspiration and share techniques, which often opens new creative doors.

About Amar Guillen, Creator of Fine Art Prints of Nature
As a photographer capturing the artistic essence for several decades, I have mastered the art of crafting an authentic experience for art enthusiasts and collectors of visual art.
When I observe my surroundings, be it friends, family, relationships, or professional contacts, I see souls in perpetual motion. Every moment of their existence is engulfed by daily hassles, work concerns, social media, online or televised information streams, and videos on the web.
Every minute, they strive to accomplish something, fearing losing ground and feeling marginalized in this frenzied society. Imprisoned by an oppressive schedule, the essential eludes them, drowned in the tumult of daily life. Is it really crucial to watch yet another cat video on the internet? Is it necessary to post twenty daily messages on social media?
Despite this, they remain constantly stressed and anxious about the challenges of the world, without being able to influence these monumental problems. It is at this moment that my artistic nature photographs come into play. Those who have had the privilege of hanging one of my works in their personal or professional space have expressed a radical transformation in their lives.
Every day, contemplating these works of art immerses them in tranquility, inner peace, and rediscovered serenity. They then understand that nature has the power to unravel tensions, to encourage reflection on the essential. Artistic photographs thus become open windows to the wonders of nature.
I have chosen to share the best of myself by helping others discover their identity, personality, style, all while reconnecting with nature. Take the time to explore my artistic photographs if you wish to reveal your true essence. Once hung in your space, your view of the world will be transformed.
Amar Guillen is a creator of fine art prints of nature.
I am Amar Guillen, creator of nature art photographs. I have a deep conviction that contemplating nature has the power to transform human beings. If everyone learned to know, respect, and preserve nature, our world would be transformed into a haven of peace where everyone would find their place.
