The Story of the Collection
Animal silhouettes are very symbolic forms for me. They can evoke feelings of departure, flight, and freedom. These images allow the viewer to experience the same emotions. The only limit is the observer’s imagination.
The eyes of the animal are not visible in a silhouette photograph. This fact accentuates themes of mystery in the scene. The look is implied but not visible. The shape of the body is important. It becomes suggestive. Everything is carried through the movement and attitude of the animal.
I chose to highlight these photographs of animal silhouettes with my "Lights and Colors" style in very clean photos. This technique allows me to better display the emotions and emphasize the essential message of the photograph. The color is not distracting. On the contrary, it reinforces the attitudes of the animals’ bodies to magnify them more clearly.
In this collection, I wanted to reflect upon the beginning of this technique invented by Mr. Silhouette, Minister of Finance for King Louis XV. Mr. Silhouette created portraits against the light to capture only the contours of their profile on the walls of his castle in Bry-Sur-Marne. Throughout my career, I have always been fascinated by some naughty or amusing drawings which are so different from the representations of the time.
For me, this silhouette is a unique way to transcend the animal world using suggestive forms that cannot be replicated by any other technique.
