The Little story of this Article

A few years ago, I was looking for a photo gallery to represent me in the East of France. I had sent dozens of letters. I finally was granted an appointment with a gallery. I was so happy, and I told myself that I was going to reach my goal.

I booked a flight ticket. I picked up five artworks in my place of residence in Europe. After three days of traveling from Texas, I found myself in Alsace.

I double-checked the time and date of the appointment with the photo gallery. When I arrived, the gallery owner was waiting for me.

I presented him with the five artworks I had chosen. He flew over my work. Then, after a few moments of intense reflection, he said to me, "I believe that your photos are too aesthetic. I am not interested. I hope that you will find a gallery corresponding to your artistry.”

And just like that, the interview was over. It was not the shortest appointment I have ever been to, but after three days of traveling and a lot of hope, those ten minutes left a bitter taste in my mouth.

So, I drove my car back along the 800 km (500 miles) of road that separated me from my residence.

The gallery owner’s expression "too aesthetic" resonated in my head over and over as I drove. I was frustrated and confused.

I began to think that he probably did not understand the meaning of the expression.

After some research and a few scribbled pages, I understood that the gallery owner had used an unsupported argument.

The owner had wanted to play the role of a learned art critic. He had certainly heard others criticize works, and thus repeated these words thinking that he was showcasing his cultural knowledge. A dead fish goes with the flow.

I realized that his argument was worthless because it did not make sense, as there was no evidence.

The gallery owner was not an exception. In photography, the word “aesthetics” is often misused by many photographers and critics.

I will unpack its meaning in the rest of this article.

Definition of The Word "Aestheticism”

Aestheticism is a philosophical theory that sets out to determine the reasons that something is considered beautiful.

You can already see that aestheticism is ultimately about studying behavior. It is by no means a precise doctrine that defines strict and clear rules.

Definition of The Word "Aesthetics”

If the word “aestheticism” is a philosophical theory, the word “aesthetics”, which is derived from it, can be used as an adjective.

The word “aesthetics” defines the perception of beauty, or the emotions it evokes.

This is often the meaning that most people use.

In its broadest definition, aesthetics is the study of sensory perceptions, emotions, and judgements related to the essence of beauty.

For me, this definition is the most interesting because it is intuitive, easy to understand, and above all, easy to implement in photography.

Applying “Aesthetics” to Photography

As I explained in other articles of this blog:

"The mission of photographic art is to break our habits of thought and our fixed representations into images that would arrange the authority of an exclusive realism".

This is the reason that pushed me to become an artistic photographer after a career in illustrative photography. I wanted to free myself from the editorial shackles, breaking the chains imposed on me through precise technical criteria.

Let us return to our study of aesthetics.

Defining aesthetics in photography is to define why some people find photos beautiful.

In a previous article, I explained that:

"A photograph is beautiful if it evokes a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction to the viewer. I want to emphasize that the photographer is also included as a “viewer”.

Finally, to concretely define aesthetics in photography is to define why some people find your photographs beautiful.

I would like to share two sentences that I have always found remarkably interesting because they are perfectly adapted to photographic activity:

"Aesthetics defines the science of the sensible."

"The aesthetics is the science of beauty in nature and in art."

This last sentence is extraordinary to me. Indeed, I am passionate about the wonders of nature and its hidden treasures. Artistically highlighting the wonders of nature is one of the most important aspects of my photographic “why”.

If you take away one thing from this paragraph, remember this: Photographic aesthetics focuses on understanding why people appreciate a certain work by an artist.

Why Defining Aesthetics in Photography?

After these few paragraphs of definition and application to photography, you have certainly understood that the purpose of aesthetics is to understand why people love certain photographs.

But you may be asking yourself, “Why does this matter to me, personally? Why should I be interested in this philosophical doctrine of aesthetics?”

I will give you several reasons that I think are essential answers to this question.

The first reason for being interested in the aesthetics of photography is to find out why people like your photos.

By giving an answer to this question, you will persist in your photographic and/or artistic choices.

If you practice illustrative photography for articles or books, you will be able to better understand your stories and the reasons of why you choose to take these types of photos.

If you practice artistic photography, you will establish criteria that define your style. You will list your strong points, and you will then be able to use this list as a reference for highlighting photo sessions.

The second reason is to strengthen your photographic mind and your photographic “why” or “purpose.”

If you know why your photos appeal to on your audience, you will gain confidence. You will no longer doubt your ability to create excellent works. Your photographic mindset will strengthen. When you receive negative criticism of your photographic activity you will be able to respond more objectively because your analysis will be conducted in a calm manner.

The third reason for understanding how your photos’ aesthetics spark the interest of your viewers is that in doing so, you strengthen your artistry. Indeed, by studying the reasons for why your photos attract a certain audience, you will strengthen your photographic vision and your photographic signature. You will certainly remove techniques that you use because you will realize that they are useless.

You will learn about other techniques that are used to convey messages expressing emotions. This will enhance your symbolism.

If you have decided to create more conceptual or decorative photos, you will continue to apply the general processes that you are using. However, you may decide to apply them more subtly.

Finally, and this is the fourth reason, you will continue to create more consistent photos, by following a guideline that you have chosen. Your photographic activity will be more personalized, making it stand out from other photographers.

If, for example, you realize that it is your compositions, your framing, and your development method that are your assets and your strength, you will continue in this direction. Your photographic creations will be consistent, making them easy to recognize.

I want to conclude by emphasizing the importance of defining the aesthetics of your photos. It is a crucial step that strengthens your photographic activity by ensuring a consistent, coherent, and creative production.

5 Tips for Making Your Photos Beautiful, Useful, and Interesting

Sets of lights at the surface of Lake Yellowstone.

5 Tips to Make a Photo Beautiful and Useful

To create a beautiful and useful photograph, you must start from its foundation. First, it must be technically correct.

A photo with visible technical errors will provoke criticism from your audience.

Your photo will no longer be looked at and analyzed for what it is. Judgment will be made on technique. This would be a real shame.

If you want to verify what I have just told you, just look at pictures that you or other people find beautiful. You will see that they are excellent in their technique.

When I refer to the basic photographic technique, I am implying the following points:

  • The choice of point of view.
  • The choice of a harmonious composition with adept management of the photographic masses.
  • The choice of framing.
  • The choice of negative space.
  • The management of the main photographic element’s sharpness.
  • The management of dynamic forms.
  • Etc.

I will now share how to do this.

The second piece of advice I will give you is to try to be creative. You must try to catch a person's eye by creating in a different way from other photographers.

Never forget that you have your own personality and above all that you are a unique person.

Creativity will allow you to highlight all the elements of your photo.

Your creativity can express itself with photographic techniques such as:

  • Panning.
  • Zooming.
  • HDR.
  • Etc.

But your creativity can also express itself with original compositions or frames that will characterize you.

In this case, you must change the basic photographic rules. You must absolutely master them before making any changes.

A third tip for how to create a beautiful and useful photo is to photos that mean something to you.

Try to put into words the emotions you feel when you photograph a nature scene.

In doing so, you are learning the photographic language that I have discussed in previous articles.

Since photography is a medium, you must know how to assemble the photographic elements and then link them together with appropriate photographic grammar. Your photo will then express a message, transmit an emotion. Or you will show your vision of the world in an aesthetic way.

If your photograph is significant, it will be useful to you because you will express yourself. I think that this point is particularly important.

It will also be useful to the audience that contemplates it. It will raise questions that can be moral, ethical, introspective, emotional.

The consequence of your photo being beautiful is that it will have exacerbated the senses of the viewers.

As a fourth piece of advice, I would recommend that you always showcase your photographs well.

Carefully choose the paper on which you will print your image so that it becomes a masterpiece.

I often compare this crucial stage to that of a chrysalis becoming a butterfly.

The birth of a photo through the printing process is always a moving, extraordinary moment.

Once the photograph finally exists on paper, be sure to frame it for presentation.

It will be the ultimate mark of respect for you and your audience.

In all the years I have spent creating art prints from nature, I have come to understand that presentation matters as much as content.

When I deliver an art print to a client, I always look into his eyes. His gaze immediately goes to the center of the print, but the hands and the body go through the frame to better appreciate the gift.

I believe that the happiness felt by my clients in these moments makes me understand why a photo must be beautiful and above all its usefulness.

Finally, for the fifth tip, I would recommend that you choose very carefully the title and the story you are going to tell.

The title should be evocative, perhaps poetic. But it must immediately provoke in the viewer a kind of escape or dream.

The title should be catchy, suggestive, provocative. Then it is the narration of the story in a few lines. This story will allow you to take the viewer into your world. You take him by the hand to take him on the path you followed to create your photo collection.

This is the final phase of how to create beautiful and useful photos.

Your Photos Are Not Made to Please Everyone

Above all, do not worry if your photographs do not please everyone. I would say that proves that your photographs are interesting.

If your photographs are unanimously approved by those who look at them, it is because you have created average photos.

Personally, that is not what I am looking for. As a professional photographer, I have loyal clients who share the same aesthetic, moral or ethical values as me. They are different from other people who do not appreciate my photographic activity.

If I had to create photos that pleased people in the second category, on the one hand I would lose all the people in the first category. On the other hand, I would please myself more.

I will no longer respect my photographic why. I will get lost. I would betray my values.

I think it is the same for you. Loyalty to your own values is the essential criterion for a successful photo business and for a successful life. The diversity of opinions as to whether a photo is beautiful and successful comes from the fact that the notion of beauty is subjective.

We each have different upbringings. We each grew up and evolved in different social environments.

We all have a different upbringing. We all grew up and evolved in different social environments.

Our literary, musical, aesthetic, and artistic tastes are different.

That is the strength of human beings. It is what generates the energy of inspiration. This is the intrinsic beauty of humanity.

In short, the important thing for you is to create photos for those who love them and especially photos that look like you.

Do not look for unanimity. You would be boring.

If you have an established photographic approach, if you have a strong photographic why, if you have a strong photographic foundation, then you will create photos that will interest some people. They will be your audience.

These are the ones you must respect by offering them beautiful photographs that are useful to them.

Finally

Until now, you may not have considered photography as a means of expression that can create objects that are beautiful and useful.

I hope I have broadened your perspective on this.

I would recommend that you always create photos with those who love your style and vision in mind.

If you want to create a beautiful and useful photo, start by taking photographs of that which you are passionate about. The story should come from your heart.

You will gain confidence, and others’ criticism will not break down your spirit.

Be humble, patient, constant, persevering, and persistent because the road to excellence is long.

About Amar Guillen, Creator of Fine Art Prints of Nature
As a photographer capturing the artistic essence for several decades, I have mastered the art of crafting an authentic experience for art enthusiasts and collectors of visual art.
When I observe my surroundings, be it friends, family, relationships, or professional contacts, I see souls in perpetual motion. Every moment of their existence is engulfed by daily hassles, work concerns, social media, online or televised information streams, and videos on the web.
Every minute, they strive to accomplish something, fearing losing ground and feeling marginalized in this frenzied society. Imprisoned by an oppressive schedule, the essential eludes them, drowned in the tumult of daily life. Is it really crucial to watch yet another cat video on the internet? Is it necessary to post twenty daily messages on social media?
Despite this, they remain constantly stressed and anxious about the challenges of the world, without being able to influence these monumental problems. It is at this moment that my artistic nature photographs come into play. Those who have had the privilege of hanging one of my works in their personal or professional space have expressed a radical transformation in their lives.
Every day, contemplating these works of art immerses them in tranquility, inner peace, and rediscovered serenity. They then understand that nature has the power to unravel tensions, to encourage reflection on the essential. Artistic photographs thus become open windows to the wonders of nature.
I have chosen to share the best of myself by helping others discover their identity, personality, style, all while reconnecting with nature. Take the time to explore my artistic photographs if you wish to reveal your true essence. Once hung in your space, your view of the world will be transformed.
Amar Guillen is a creator of fine art prints of nature.
I am Amar Guillen, creator of nature art photographs. I have a deep conviction that contemplating nature has the power to transform human beings. If everyone learned to know, respect, and preserve nature, our world would be transformed into a haven of peace where everyone would find their place.
