Why and How: Photographing Using a Floating Blind to Take Unique Pictures

UUsing a floating blind allows you to take creative and unique photos.

It enables you to get remarkably close to all kinds of animals that live in the wetlands, from birds and mammals to insects. But a floating blind is more than a mere accessory. It allows us to take unique, creative photos and capture moods that cannot be found on land. Photography from a floating blind is its own field.

The floating blind allows us to make photographs in accordance with my artistic approach. Over the years we have developed a real photo project based on wetland birds.

A Tent Mounted on An Inflatable Device

A floating blind has two parts: an inflatable floating support and a tent held up by poles. There is a door in the back of the blind so that the photographer can enter it, and an opening in the front for the lens.

On top of the inflatable support, there is a board with a screw on it for the ball that supports the camera and lens.

The photographer pushes the floating blind as he walks around in the swamp. The only real enemy of this little house on the water is the wind. If it blows into the blind, the blind may fly away. When the wind blows hard, it is almost impossible to push against it and move forward.

However, the blind has two great benefits:

  • It allows us to get awfully close to aquatic animals.
  • It provides a unique point of view.

Getting Closer to Aquatic Animals

A floating blind can be used to take pictures of aquatic animals from a short distance. It is not rare to be 30 yards from a bird or mammal without any cover at all.

Animals tolerate the presence of a floating blind well, and the thick canvas tent muffles the noise emitted by the camera. However, when a photographer approaches his subject, he still has to be completely calm and silent. He should not make waves in the water or move the blind suddenly.

Some birds, such as purple herons, need more space than others. If a photographer gets too close, they immediately fly away. I always watch the animals to make sure that they are comfortable with where I am. If they start acting nervous, I stop moving. If I am too far away to take a photo, I wait a few minutes for the animals to get used to my presence. Once they are behaving normally again, I move forward.

Taking Pictures from a Unique Angle

A floating blind enables me to take photos from a unique viewpoint. When photographing a marsh or wetland from a bank, there is always a slight "diving" effect in the photo. The subjects are always photographed from a slight angle.

In a floating blind, the photographer is always flush with the water. This gives the impression that the subjects are very close to the photographer. Very often, the pictures are taken when the subject is at the photographer’s eye level.

The pictures have more impact because the optical axes are always straight and pointed to the subjects.

I Always Respect the Animals

When I use a floating blind to observe and photograph aquatic animals in their natural environment, I always respect some important rules.

When I observe a bird sitting on a nest, I always remain at a good distance. If the bird gets up to leave the nest when I approach, I stop and gently move back.

I never get out of the floating blind when I am on a pond. Once, because of a strong wind, I had to get out of the tent. I had barely put our heads out when all the birds on the pond flew away. That day, I realized that the birds perceived us as a real danger. Since then, I have never gotten out of a floating blind while in the water for any reason.

I never chase or disturb animals, especially when adults have their young with them.

The Day I Flooded My Waders

"Practice makes perfect." This adage can easily be adapted to using a floating blind: it is by practicing that a photographer learns the limits of the blind.

I have flooded our waders to the armpits. Common sense warned me that I was going too far and that I would sink too deep, but each time I thought that I could find an unlikely way to go further.

I sank too far, and my waders filled with water up to the armpits. It is a very unpleasant feeling. The worst part is that it takes a long time to get back to the bank afterwards. Now that I know what it feels like to flood my waders, I always keep at least 8 inches between the water and the armpits of the waders.

An Indispensable Tool for Capturing the Wonders of Nature

A floating blind is an indispensable tool for a wildlife photographer who wants to take creative photos of aquatic animals. Learning to handle one only requires minimal training. Every year, I spend several weeks taking photos on a level with the water. By practicing and learning about specific regions, I have gained technical mastery of an area of photography which enables us to capture a sublimely beautiful aspect of nature.

We celebrated the 10th anniversary of our company Guillen Photo LLC

Ten years is an important milestone for a company. Indeed, in the United States, 50% of companies disappear before reaching their fifth year of existence. 50% of those that remain will disappear before reaching their 10th year. In the end, only 25% of all companies survive for 10 years. Since May, we have had the good luck and the pleasure to be part of this 25%. Our success has not been easy. It was full of difficulties. We have sometimes been discouraged. But we have never doubted our choices: we have always maintained our course by focusing on our objectives. Our values are still the same.

Sunrise and blue hour on Bosque Del Apache in New Mexico.

The record of the last 10 years in figures

We can summarize the results of these ten years of hard work in a list of numbers, which are understandable and easy to remember:

    • 2850 images sold, either through agencies or directly.
    • 185 articles published.
    • 5 books published.
    • 5 exhibitions.
    • 225 fine art photographs sold.
    • 51 photography trips and workshops organized.

Over these 10 years, we have consistently followed our passion

But for us, the true balance is solely measured by the passion for photography we have for these years and that has remained intact. We have always done our projects in accordance with our values. The creation of photos, reports, exhibitions, art photo collections always have the same goal: to show and share our passion for the wonders of nature.

This is also why we organize and animate photo trips and workshops: to share and to teach to respect the nature that surrounds us, whether on land or underwater.

    The beginning of our company

The adventure began in June 2003, when we were in the US, in the state of Texas. As professional photographers, we were able to have professional visas that enabled us to live in this country where we came to fulfill our dreams of travel.

Our status as professional photographers quickly showed its limitations in the management of our revenues. Then we created our first company, Guillen Photography. It was a partnership company. In May 2005, as our business was growing, we decided to separate our commercial assets from our personal property. We then created Guillen Photo LLC (a Limited Liability Company). That was the beginning of a wonderful adventure that continues today.

A company is a joint adventure

Running a business is not just making a living. It is also a journey that we share every day. With the inception of Guillen Photo LLC, we started both. We had a clear vision of what we were looking for in our life and of what our passions were. We decided to combine them to live each moment fully. We quickly realized that we were responsible for our lives and for our actions. We understood that the creation of a future that would conform to our values would be possible only if we were masters of our destiny.

We quickly set a clear vision for our company and we have defined a number of goals for our clients.

When we created our company, we founded it on moral values which we firmly believe. During these ten years, we have built up our business and revenue, but we have always stayed true to our initial choices. We have never deviated from the rules that we set in May 2005, when we signed the documents that created our company.

In addition to a real business contract, we established a moral contract that we always respect.

    Changes in direction were necessary

The first contracts we signed were with magazines which wanted photos for advertising campaigns. Naturally, we started selling our pictures through photography agencies. It was a very interesting time because there were not many online agencies. We were able to generate comfortable income through just 2 agencies.

In 2007 we had the idea of sharing our passion for the beauty of nature, especially underwater scenes and animals. We organized our first photography workshop. Today, nearly 300 photographers have accompanied us on these trips. The contacts and exchanges from these trips have become indispensable to our personal balance.

In 2010, we found that the income from stock photography and magazines had begun to decline rapidly. The number of photos sold remained the same but the prices of the photos fell.

At the end of 2011, we noticed another fact: magazines were not paying adequately for freelancing anymore. We had to pay all the expenses involved in creating stories without being certain that they would be published.

That's when we decided to change our business to something new: selling art photographs. It was not a new area for us, because we had had the opportunity to sell some art photographs, but now, all our attention and all our efforts would be focused on this business.

Two years of work to develop the art photography business

Two years of work and strenuous efforts were needed to develop collections of art photographs. We followed up hundreds of leads. We spent weeks on the road to market our products.

It has not been easy, but we have managed to build strong relationships with our customers. Trust has been established between us. They adhere to our values. We always listen to their preferences about framings and subjects. But the final choice is always true to our value of respecting the wonders of nature. We are intransigent on this essential point.

We will keep our vision and our goals for the next 10 years

For the next 10 years, we have built a solid roadmap with a clear vision of the goals we want to achieve. We will certainly have to make changes as we have done in the past. But the ultimate goal is always clear. Our mission will always be to offer beautiful artistic photographs for customers who demand quality. We will also continue to lead workshops and photography trips devoted to discovering the wonders of nature because we have had great satisfaction from these trips during the past eight years. We look forward to these photography trips, because we get to share our passion and our values.

About Amar Guillen, Creator of Fine Art Prints of Nature
As a photographer capturing the artistic essence for several decades, I have mastered the art of crafting an authentic experience for art enthusiasts and collectors of visual art.
When I observe my surroundings, be it friends, family, relationships, or professional contacts, I see souls in perpetual motion. Every moment of their existence is engulfed by daily hassles, work concerns, social media, online or televised information streams, and videos on the web.
Every minute, they strive to accomplish something, fearing losing ground and feeling marginalized in this frenzied society. Imprisoned by an oppressive schedule, the essential eludes them, drowned in the tumult of daily life. Is it really crucial to watch yet another cat video on the internet? Is it necessary to post twenty daily messages on social media?
Despite this, they remain constantly stressed and anxious about the challenges of the world, without being able to influence these monumental problems. It is at this moment that my artistic nature photographs come into play. Those who have had the privilege of hanging one of my works in their personal or professional space have expressed a radical transformation in their lives.
Every day, contemplating these works of art immerses them in tranquility, inner peace, and rediscovered serenity. They then understand that nature has the power to unravel tensions, to encourage reflection on the essential. Artistic photographs thus become open windows to the wonders of nature.
I have chosen to share the best of myself by helping others discover their identity, personality, style, all while reconnecting with nature. Take the time to explore my artistic photographs if you wish to reveal your true essence. Once hung in your space, your view of the world will be transformed.
